You don’t have to drive far from Milford for a real scare this fall. Legends of Fear, the haunted hayride and walking trail at Fairview Tree Farm in Shelton, opens tonight, Friday, Oct. 2, for its 30th season. From the Milford Green it’s roughly 13 miles, which works out to about 25 minutes in normal traffic. Allow extra time on busy nights.
“TOMORROW NIGHT, the screaming begins,” the attraction posted on Facebook Thursday. The farm bills itself as “one of New England’s premier haunted attractions,” and says families have made it part of their Halloween tradition for more than 30 years.
Two ways to get scared
The Haunted Hayride is the original, and it runs about 30 minutes. You sit on real hay bales in a tractor-drawn wagon (each one holds up to 32 people) and roll more than a mile past haunted sets, live actors and plenty of special effects.
The Hallow is the walking trail, and it takes about 45 minutes. It winds more than half a mile through the woods, and the ticket page promises over 70 live actors along the way. Scenes include the Carnevil de Beast, Melonhead Revenge Trail, Hemlock Asylum, Pine Hills Parish and The Dark Harvest. Legends of Fear is a no-touch haunt: actors won’t intentionally touch you, and you can’t touch them.
Between scares there’s a midway with fresh mini donuts, hot apple cider, hot chocolate, merchandise, and The Cauldron, which serves non-alcoholic drinks topped with swirling fog.

Dates, tickets and the sell-out warning
The 2026 season runs 14 nights. Both attractions are open Oct. 2, 3, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 23, 24, 25 and 30, and on Nov. 1. On Oct. 18 and Oct. 29, only The Hallow is open. Heads up: the farm is not open on Halloween night itself. The farm calls Oct. 16, 17, 23 and 24 high-demand nights. Entry is timed, and the first slots start at 7 p.m.
On the official ticket site, the hayride or The Hallow costs $37 each and a combo ticket for both is $70. Premier FastPass (listed at checkout as a VIP Pass) is $50 for a single attraction or $99 for the combo. Online fees may be added. FastPass gets you through a separate, priority entrance at each attraction, though you still come in at your ticketed time.
Buy online. The farm warns that admission times, and sometimes entire nights, sell out, and October weekends close to Halloween go first. You may be able to buy leftover tickets at the booth, but there’s no guarantee. Tickets are non-refundable unless the farm closes for severe weather. Active military members get $3 off one attraction or $6 off a combo, in person only.
Is it OK for kids?
Legends of Fear is aimed at teens and adults. Kids under 6 aren’t allowed on either attraction, and anyone under 16 has to stay with an adult. The farm generally recommends the hayride for kids older than 9 and The Hallow for kids older than 11. Its ticket page says The Hallow isn’t recommended for anyone under 12.
Tips before you go
- Arrive early. Get there 35 minutes before your entry time, or 45 minutes on high-demand nights. Everyone goes through security and checks in first.
- Dress for the woods. Both attractions are outdoors on gravel and uneven ground. Wear closed-toe shoes and leave the flip-flops at home. The farm stays open in light rain.
- Leave it in the car. Backpacks, alcohol, smoking and vaping aren’t allowed, and neither are masks that hide your face.
- Hate lines? Get FastPass. There are only so many each night, and you can also upgrade at the Welcome Center when you arrive.
Parking is free, and attendants will send you to an off-site shuttle lot if the main lots fill up. The address is 2 Saw Mill City Road.
