MILFORD — Downtown Milford’s Hall-O-Weekend hits its big day today. The Festival on the Green runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, and a brand-new Gilmore Girls-themed finale, Falls Hallow Fest, takes over the Green from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Everything is free, according to the Downtown Milford Business Association, which puts on the weekend.

This is the event’s 24th year. It started Friday night with an outdoor movie double feature on the Green, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” and “Practical Magic.”

Saturday: Festival on the Green, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The DMBA calls Saturday “a not-too-spooky family adventure.” Here’s what’s on the schedule:

  • A hay maze
  • Trick-or-treating at downtown businesses
  • Halloween crafts and face painting
  • A costume parade (around noon, per the DMBA’s listing)
  • More than 50 vendors
  • Food trucks and live music

Bring the kids in costume. The trick-or-treating runs through downtown shops, so it’s a good excuse to walk River Street and Broad Street while you’re there.

Sunday: the new Falls Hallow Fest, noon to 5 p.m.

The finale is new this year, inspired by the TV show “Gilmore Girls.” The DMBA’s advice: “grab your backward baseball cap and flannel shirt,” plan on bottomless coffee, and take your picture in front of the old Ford pickup.

Local businesses are running the hands-on stations:

  • Knit-a-thon with Milford Makes
  • Junk journaling with Mermaid Books
  • A bracelet bar with SV Decker jewelry
  • A flannel patch bar with Bond & Co.
  • Temporary tattoos and stickers at Black Rabbit
  • Bouquets and flower bookmarks with Fleurescent
  • Paint-your-own pottery with Sunshine Ceramics
  • Coffee from Cafe Atlantique and baked goods from Scratch Baking
  • Pumpkin painting, live music, a vendor market and contests

  • The new public parking under 44 River St.
  • Armory Square/Harborwalk, 22 Broad St.
  • Lisman Landing, 37 Helwig St.

The Milford Metro-North station is a short walk from the Green, too.

Also tonight in West Haven

If you’ve still got energy after the festival, West Haven’s free Halloween on the Green starts at 5 p.m. tonight on the West Haven Green, a collaboration between West Haven United and the city, according to the city’s special events page.

Looking ahead to Halloween itself? Here’s every trunk or treat in Milford, Orange and West Haven, and the full list is on our events calendar.
