Ask West Haven where to eat and you will start an argument. A recent vote in a local Facebook group for the city’s “Best Restaurant of 2026” proved it. The same six names kept coming back, over and over: a cash-only seafood shack across from the beach, an Italian market people call the city’s “Little Italy,” an Irish pub that has been pouring since 1983, an oyster bar on Campbell Avenue, a pizzeria that has been on Union Avenue since 1934, and the newest spot on the Savin Rock strip.
Milford Voice could not view the full thread publicly, so there is no official tally or winner here, and we are not guessing at numbers. What we can tell you is which spots locals kept naming, and everything you need to try them yourself. Addresses, specialties and hours below come from each restaurant’s own website. Hours change, so call ahead.
1. Stowe’s Seafood
347 Beach Street · 203-934-1991
Stowe’s calls itself a classic seafood shack across from West Haven’s beach, serving fresh fish fried New England style and lobster rolls in paper boats. The family’s roots go back to the Depression, when Wayne Stowe’s grandmother started selling clam chowder off the back porch, according to the restaurant’s history. Fish comes in every day and is cut and breaded on site.
Hours: Monday–Saturday 11 a.m.–7 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Cash only (there is an ATM on site).
2. Cappetta’s Italian
188 Boston Post Road · 203-937-7485
Cappetta’s is part restaurant, part Italian market. It sells specialty imports and groceries alongside pizza, sandwiches and take-out, and it caters, including with a food truck. The business says it is often called West Haven’s “Little Italy.” Pizza fans can also look into its “30 in 30” pizza challenge.
Hours: Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; closed Sunday.
3. Duffy’s Tavern
241 Campbell Avenue · 203-933-9721
An Irish pub and restaurant established in 1983, Duffy’s leans into oak antiques, Irish décor and walls of sports legends and local photos. The menu runs from comfort food to gourmet entrées, and there is a Sunday brunch.
Kitchen hours: Tuesday–Thursday 4–9 p.m.; Friday–Saturday from 4 p.m. (the site lists a 10 p.m. close); Sunday 11:30 a.m.–8 p.m., with brunch 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Closed Mondays.
4. Moby Dick’s Oyster Bar + Grill
558 Campbell Avenue · 203-821-7588
Moby Dick’s serves fresh seafood and a raw bar, plus flatbreads, charcuterie boards and signature cocktails. The same team runs The Tail End, a late-night speakeasy on “the Ave.” Happy hour is Monday–Friday, 4–6 p.m.
Hours: The restaurant’s site lists opening times of 4 p.m. Monday–Thursday and noon Friday–Sunday. Its pages list different closing times, so call before a late visit or a Monday trip.
5. Zuppardi’s Apizza
179 Union Avenue · 203-934-1949
This is the original Zuppardi’s. Baker Dominic Zuppardi moved his shop to Union Avenue in 1934, and his son Anthony later turned it into a pizza-only operation, renaming it Zuppardi’s Apizza in 1947. It is known for New Haven-style pies, and the family credits Anthony’s homemade Italian fennel sausage with making the menu take off. The family still runs it.
Hours: Monday–Thursday 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; Friday–Saturday 11 a.m.–9 p.m.; Sunday noon–8 p.m. The dining room closes 30 minutes earlier.
6. The Breakwall
305 Captain Thomas Boulevard · 203-535-1109
The newest name on the list. Owners Brendan and Katrina Snow opened The Breakwall in the Savin Rock business district, near the beach, in July 2023, the West Haven Voice reported. The billing is “food, drinks, music”: burgers, seafood, wings, local beers on tap and live music. Look for the Bacon Jam Burger and Nonnie’s Chicken. Happy hour runs Tuesday–Friday, 4–6 p.m.
Kitchen hours: Monday 5–10 p.m. (limited menu); Tuesday–Thursday 4–10 p.m.; Friday–Saturday noon–11 p.m.; Sunday noon–9 p.m. The bar stays open later.
So who wins?
