Milford, Connecticut police officers rescued two people who became trapped inside a vehicle as it filled with water during a storm in July, the department announced alongside the release of body camera footage of the incident.
Officers responded after a 911 caller reported a car filling with water with two occupants inside. The vehicle had become disabled under an overpass, and the doors would not open or unlock, leaving the occupants unable to get out on their own.
Body camera footage shows an officer approaching the car and telling one of the occupants, “You’re alright. You’re alright. I’m going to try and open this door, okay?” The occupant responded, “It doesn’t open.”

An officer used an emergency car window breaking tool to smash the driver’s side window. After breaking the window, the officer was able to get the passenger side door open. Both the driver and passenger exited through the passenger door and were led to safety. Video of the incident shows the water at the scene was knee-deep.
Milford police released the body camera footage to recognize the officers involved in the rescue and to warn residents about the dangers of driving through flooded areas, according to the department.
Along with releasing the footage, police issued a public warning advising drivers to avoid flooded roadways and to use particular caution near bridges and overpass areas.
